An Introduction

Maldives has been a group of  with dwellers for more than thousand years and the country has been ruled by kings and queens from different dynasties.

Thus Maldives has a long history of government and politics. Most of the governments in the Maldives in the past were kingdoms or monarchies , though recently the system of government changed and now the country is a republic. Moreover, currently the country practices multi-party system of government. We also call it a democratic form of government though democracy is rather complex term to define right on the spot.

People of the Maldives had been Muslims for more than a thousand years and religious and cultural conflicts are minimum. The main difficulty for the past governments to manage the country was the geographical nature of the country. Currently the transportation system is better than the past though not adequate. Hence the difficulty of managing distant islands is less.

Though the population of the country is scattered to about 200 islands country is managed by one government. Recently a provincial system by dividing the country into seven provinces was begun. In the past Maldives was divided in to atolls for the ease of management. Each atoll had an atoll chief to govern the atoll as a person who represents the governments. Currently after introduction of provincial system a state minister is the head of each province.

Thus the system of government and politics has evolved greatly in the Maldives during the past 50 years , though it remained constant in the same manner before that.
